What is “Audience Development” for podcasts? It’s a set of skills and expertise that are distinct from, but deeply interconnected with editorial and production work. An Audience Development Specialist may be called upon to do editorial and production work as assigned, as well as supporting the show teams with intel and skills that help inform audience growth work


Research “Who is this show for? What do they want? How are they already served? How can our show offer something new and distinctive?”


Product Packaging “What’s the visual identity of our show? Who should write our episode titles? What should be on our podcast website?”


Distribution “We have an MP3 file. How do we get it into listeners’ ears?”


Marketing and Promotions“How can our clients use paid, earned, owned, and internal channels to reach their intended audience?”


Measurement“How many people did our client’s show reach? How long did they listen? Did listeners like the show? Did our paid promotions work? Did our podcast improve listeners’ impressions of our client? What will we do differently in our


next episode?


As an Audience Development Specialist, you’ll combine your love of audio storytelling with a spirit of creative problem solving and client service. Assigned to supporting multiple show teams at once, you’ll act as the primary Audience Development support for our internal teams, with the show's Showrunner or Exec as your primary point of contact. In concert with the show lead, you may also have client-facing roles to present and deliver data, analysis, and research, as well as to work with the show lead on audience growth strategies. Within the company, you will be the advocate for best practices in audience development, publishing, metrics, and the tools used to make our shows most effective, keeping up with changing algorithms, platform and publishing requirements, and podcast marketing and promotion trends and innovations.


What You Will Do...

  • Support editorial and production teams and the clients and shows they work with
  • Support the show teams with input into internal and client-facing audience development kickoff sessions for new shows and new seasons
  • Advise show teams and clients on product packaging elements
  • Work with clients, internal editorial teams, and the Audience Development department to create campaigns across paid, earned, owned, and internal channels
  • Create and manage show/season asset documents
  • Manage the day-to-day needs of paid campaigns
  • Write campaign briefs
  • Draft talking points, facilitate client approvals
  • Collect and distribute air checks
  • Monitor the health of shows and campaigns, and suggest optimizations to the editorial leads
  • Clearly and concisely communicate podcast metrics to clients and internal teams
  • Translate podcast metrics into actionable insights and recommendations for future editorial and marketing plans
  • Advocate for known best practices. Discover new best practices
  • Editorial production work (chasing and interviewing guests, editing audio, writing outlines for shows and series) as needed
