Hybrid at the NBA is defined as a role that is expected to be on-site Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

 

Position Summary:

This position will join and serve as a key leader and manager in NBA Player Health, a team whose impact spans multiple departments, working on all matters related to player health, safety, and wellness at the NBA. The Player Health and Performance Lead will serve a central role in leading and managing the Player Health group and many of the operational activities related to the health, safety, and wellness of players in the NBA - including through interaction with NBA team health and performance personnel. This person also will be involved with health practices across the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League, and Basketball Africa League.

 

This individual will be responsible for managing ongoing key strategic health initiatives in the NBA, as well as the development, budgeting, staffing, and operation of new initiatives that are designed to promote player health, safety, and wellness.

 

The Player Health & Performance Lead, specifically, will be responsible for managing the ongoing operation of existing health initiatives, which will include interacting with key health-related committees, advancing existing partnerships, and managing current operational processes. This work will involve coordination and close partnership across multiple NBA departments - including Basketball Operations, Basketball Strategy and Analytics, Legal, Finance, Business Development, IT and Cyber Security, Human Resources, Medical Operations, and Events.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop, in collaboration with the Senior Vice President, Player Matters and Director of Sports Medicine, and execute short- and long-term strategy and organizational plans for the Player Health group.
  • Manage, mentor, and lead Player Health strategy and operations team members, including hiring and onboarding new staff.
  • Lead day-to-day management of the budget, expenses, and financial reporting for the Player Health group.
  • Manage the league’s relationships, agreements, and operations with injury, epidemiology, and other health and performance consultants and vendors, ensuring timely completion of prescribed requirements and objectives within the agreed budget.
  • Lead key strategic player health activities for the department, including events, projects related to health and performance data & technology, and injury prevention and analysis initiatives.
  • Manage player health programs and operations, including various league health advisory committees.
  • Contribute to stakeholder and relationship management with team player health staff (physicians, athletic trainers, etc.), the National Basketball Players Association, team finance representatives, and team counsel.
  • Help oversee health and performance research studies, meetings, and media releases.
  • Draft policies and memos to teams regarding player health and performance matters.

 

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • At least 5 years of experience working in a role related to athlete health in elite sports
  • Demonstrated experience as a successful people manager

Education:

  • Relevant advanced degree preferred (MBA, PhD or equivalent)

 

Salary Range:

  • $190,000 to $275,000 per year
