Public Relations Assistant, Seasonal

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Seattle Storm is seeking a professional, detail-oriented individual with strong public relations, writing and editing skills to assist the Storm public relations department as a seasonal assistant. This position is a paid, part-time seasonal role, working up to 30 hours per week from approx. mid-April through September, and reporting to the Senior Manager of Public Relations. The candidate will support the PR staff with all aspects of media relations and basketball communications, and assist with departmental efforts to drive content development for multiple marketing and communications channels. The seasonal assistant is expected to attend all Storm home games, be available to work road games remotely, and attend practices and other community events as needed.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Public Relations & Basketball Communications

  • Assist in media management on game day, including seating, credentials and pregame / postgame media availability for Storm athletes and coaches
  • Assist with game notes production for all home and road games
  •  Oversee production of postgame notes at all home games
  • Actively track player stats and milestones
  • Assist with media availability during practices as needed
  • Manage weekly media schedule releases and setting up Zoom media sessions
  • Update player information on website and other publications as required
  • Assist in production of media guides and other PR productions throughout the season
  • Occasionally write content on Storm website, including feature/lifestyle stories and basketball content (game previews and recaps)
  • Track media mentions, compiling weekly and monthly reports and distributing internally
  • Assist with writing, proofreading, and editing all marketing, communications and sales materials developed within the organization
  • Proactively offer ideas for new content for marketing and communications department initiatives
  • Post to Seattle Storm PR Twitter account when needed
  • Assist with other duties as necessary


REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES

This job requires a strong background and knowledge in sports communications and basketball statistics, and professional writing and editing skills. Examples of previous work is required.

  • 1+ years of relevant experience in communications, journalism, or public relations (Experience in a college media relations department is a plus)
  • Interested in pursuing a career in sports public relations
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (or in final year of pursuit of Bachelor’s degree)
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge and experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience writing press releases and other PR-related writing tasks
  • Exceptional writing, editing and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstratable knowledge of basketball and the WNBA
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Quick learner with the ability to operate in high-stress, fast-paced environments
  • Fast, concise accurate writer with great sense of how to speak to fans
  • Sense of humor and ability to capture the fun of Storm games, players and fans is a big plus
  • Attend all Storm home games and watch all Storm road games (40 regular season, 2 preseason and all potential postseason games)
