The U.S. Center for SafeSport (Center) is a nonprofit organization focused on ending all forms of abuse in sport. We endeavor to make athlete well-being the centerpiece of the nation’s sports culture through abuse prevention, education, and accountability.
JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Writer & Editor is a key member of the Marketing team and supports an array of Center teams and subject matter experts. This team member will be skilled in the ability to distill complex and sometimes sensitive content; including policy, education and compliance topics by providing easy to understand short articles, digital media content, newsletter articles, blogs and other customer-facing communications. The Senior Writer & Editor will translate ideas into concepts that engage and inspire audiences and move them seamlessly through a project management approval process.
The Marketing team supports the Vice President, Marketing, Education and Partnerships, prevention education, National Governing Bodies (NGB) services, audit and compliance, the CEO and assists with the promotion of new Center prevention education content initiatives and online training.
The Senior Writer & Editor will be well versed in social media copywriting and keyword best practices, writing for SEO website metrics and results. The Senior Writer & Editor will also collaborate to develop features aligned with the Center’s core messaging for both internal and external partnership publications. The right person for this role can demonstrate proficiency through a portfolio of impeccable editorial examples showcasing writing for digital media and organizational skills. They will be flexible, detail-oriented, must take feedback well, but be confident in their writing abilities and vision.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Write and edit general and technical materials; distill legal rules and policy concepts into digestible information and compelling marketing content; translate policy terms into everyday language for various audiences.
- Write and edit website copy, blog posts, articles, social media content, sales and marketing collateral, and emails.
- Working with Center Subject Matter Experts, edit long and short-form content, technical manuals and guides, one-pagers and write accompanying presentation copy.
- Work closely with the Prevention Education Writer and prevention education team to ensure concepts, language accessibility and accurateness for appropriate channel distribution and publication.
- Review material for proper grammatical usage, punctuation, format, spelling, style, and order of presentation; rewrite copy to improve clarity of meaning and consistency; edit and fact-check written content prepared by others. Well-versed in AP and Chicago style standards.
- Serve as an editorial and communications advisory team member to Center leadership and staff; provide sound communications counsel and advice to various partners across the team.
- Work alongside the Director of Marketing to plan, create and track customized content streams for external partners.
- Conduct informal content interviews with external parties, as applicable.
- Consult with legal and advise subject-matter experts about writing and revising documents; provide guidance on effective writing of core concepts.
- Build and maintain a pipeline of communications products, determining appropriate prioritization and timelines; deliver accurate publications on schedule.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 7 years of experience as a writer and with experience in nonprofit, sports organization, higher education, government, and/or youth advocacy
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related
- Expert-level writing and editing skills with an eye for detail; passion for the written word
- Understanding of writing standards and nuances for social media and SEO
- Ability to research, aggregate and synthesize large volumes of information from multiple sources
- Eagerness for collaboration and amenable to feedback
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Power Point, and Excel

- Superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

- Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, initiative, and a commitment to the Center’s mission
- Familiarity with a creative project management system a plus
- Written and spoken Spanish language fluency a plus
- Knowledge of writing about abuse prevention or violence prevention a plus
- Passion for changing the culture in sports--experience as an athlete or coach a plus
- Master’s degree a plus

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Hiring salary for this position is $69,100 - 88,578 and will be commensurate with background and experience. Benefits include PTO for vacation, sick and holidays; health care, vision and dental options; employer paid life and disability policies; 401k savings match.
